A People Movement, and a Moving People
The story of God’s people has always been about a people movement and a moving people. It was a people movement before a denomination or institutional reality, and a story before a statement of faith… and it has always been marked by a call to multiply. Part of God’s original mandate to humankind in Genesis 1:28 was to “Be fruitful and increase in number.” In the Great Commission, Jesus calls us to multiplication – this time to multiply disciples: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (Matthew 28:19) And again, in Jesus’ last words before his ascension, he calls his disciples to multiply through geographical expansion: “You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8). Jesus called ordinary people to join him, and the church he founded was a missionary movement. If the church had not functioned as a movement and failed to take the Great Commission seriously, there would have been no church then or today.

Rebuilding Our Concept of the Church from Jesus Up
Jesus could have said “Kingdom” or even “Israel.” Instead, He used one of the most inclusive and yet generic words available in your entire language. And He used it to describe the community He would build here on earth. He even said He would use it to tear down the gates of hell. In Greek the word is “ekklesia.” This is the word you would use to describe something as large and unruly as a political protest, or as small and mild as a group of friends meeting on a sunny hillside. It simply means a group of people who have been gathered or called together. That had to be intentional. He must mean something by it. But what?
Moving from Ministry to Movement: It All Starts with Surrender
Have you ever had a time when you chose to say “yes” to something that would stretch you beyond your comfort zone?……My life has been characterized by many of these moments. There was the time I decided to leave my job in corporate America with no back-up plan. Then there was the time I said “yes” to a start-up, non-profit marketing agency serving international Christian missions organizations. I was unsure if I had enough resources or skills to help the founder build what would end up lasting over a decade and in some ways was a precursor to what I’m doing now.
Postures That Bring us Closer to our Neighborhood, the City, and the World
Pains are being felt today that didn’t happen overnight, they were brought on by decades and decades of poor posture. The stories of the decline in the institutional, brick-and-mortar church complex likely hold some water and don’t need to be proven here. My guess is that you’ve read the polls and articles or are possibly feeling these realities yourself….Models of church do not accomplish or fail at God’s mission. Our postures, or posture problems, toward participation in what God is doing cause that.
The Emergence of a Church Network
The limitation of one physical location also reduced the kingdom impact in the Bay Area and beyond. Members longed to live out their unique calling of God in their circle of influence. Still, the existing church model at the time promoted the idea of complacency rather than missional living. Hence, God’s people were not released as disciple-makers and kingdom multipliers in their own context. For this reason, Channel Church transitioned from a traditionally structured church to a disciple-making, kingdom multiplication movement
The Advantage of Being a Minority: An Immigrant’s Missional Narrative
If God is as sovereign as the Bible says, then I have to wonder if God brought us here to North America for more than just the “American-Asian Dream.” Those of us who are minorities often ask ourselves, “Why am I in North America?”
Microchurch Leaders: who can lead and how do they emerge?
From middle schoolers among their classmates to families and single people in their neighborhoods, from victim survivors among addicts and women in the sex industry to professionals in places of business. Wherever Jesus is at work calling people into his mission, microchurch leaders can emerge.
